What are the Vital Components for a Summer of Feeling your Best?
We love our Texas Summers filled with swimming, barbecues, family time, nature, and exploring this great state, but having a great Summer starts with making good wellness choices.
What are the Best Ways to Stay Hydrated in the Summer?
Staying hydrated helps your body detox, regulates temperature, assists with weight management, and helps your skin look better. Make sure you are consuming not just enough water but also electrolytes. Our spa Esthetician Blanca gives the perfect Summer tip to ensure hydration: “ Eat fruits and infuse fruit in your water to provide your body with the necessary minerals and electrolytes”. There are so many fruits high in electrolytes such as watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, coconuts, bananas, and the list goes on. Coconut water itself is also another great way to stay hydrated because of the natural minerals and potassium that are included. Your organs and your complexion will thank you for staying hydrated especially in hotter temperatures.
Vitamin C: Why is it Important and What Kind to Purchase?
We recommend using a Vitamin C serum that also incorporates Vitamin E or Ferulic Acid. Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid help stabilize Vitamin C and make it easier to absorb into the dermis. Vitamin C is important for fighting off free radicals by providing antioxidants to your skin which helps to prevent wrinkles. It also helps brighten the skin including dark spots and assist with skin regeneration and collagen production. Vitamin C is the perfect Summer staple because it helps prevent sun damage in conjunction with SPF and keeps your skin hydrated by preventing dryness. We recommend the Eminence Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Serum which you can purchase in The Spa on The Hill Country Herb Garden property.
Sunscreen: What Kind and How Often?
Sunscreen is of course on our list for Summer skincare staples. While sunscreen is important all year round, it should be applied and reapplied in the Summer-time. If you are outside during the Summer for long periods of time, your sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours. On a daily basis sunscreen should be reapplied every 4 to 6 hours. The easiest way to incorporate this into your routine is to take a travel size sunscreen with you in your purse or pocket for easy application. We recommend using sunscreen with clean ingredients such as mineral (physical) sunscreen which include either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Using hats and longer sleeves is also recommended during times of long exposure.
Why are Small Doses of Sunlight Exposure so Important?
After protecting your skin with Vitamin C and a mineral sunscreen, get outside and into nature. It is important to not avoid the sun altogether because sun exposure for limited periods of time has so many health benefits. Sunlight helps our body function at its highest level by producing Vitamin D and improving our mood, immunity, and sleep. It is recommended that everyone gets 5-15 minutes of sunlight exposure regularly. Live your life in balance and remember that too much sun exposure can of course lead to damage.
